In size, the North-South length of the lake is 40 kilometres (25 mi) and the East-West width is roughly 7–8 kilometres (4.3–5.0 mi). The lakeshore can be explored by hiking. Highlights include Erhai Park and the Butterfly Springs on the Western bank. Islands on the lake – including Guanyin Ge, Jinsuo Island (金梭岛; 'Golden Shuttle Island'), Nanzhao Folklore Island (南诏风情岛) and Xiaoputuo Island (小普陀) – are also available for visits.

Born and raised in Chicago, Brian Linden has lived for 18 years in Xizhou, Southwest China's Yunnan Province. Erhai is the mother lake of Dali and its people. In 1996, 2003 and 2013, algal and water blooms tainted the Erhai basin. Fish and aquatic plants died as the ecology of the lake came under serious threat. In response, the local government launched a series of harsh measures. To save Erhai, the local government faced a series of difficult tradeoffs which Linden documents. Some immediate economic gains needed to be set aside in the pursuit of long-term environmental benefits not solely for Dali, but also for China and the rest of the world.

Erhai Lake is a plateau freshwater lake located in Dali City, Yunnan Province, with a total area of about 250 square kilometers, about 40 kilometers from north to south, and about 7 kilometers wide from east to west. The maximum lake depth is 22 meters, the average lake depth is about 10 meters, and the water storage capacity is about 29.5. 100 million cubic meters, it is the seventh largest freshwater lake in China, equivalent to five West Lakes. Erhai Lake, the Pearl of the Plateau, is the second largest plateau freshwater lake in Yunnan, covering an area of 252 square kilometers. Erhai Lake is located in the north of Dali City, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. It is named "Erhai" because of its shape like a human ear. Although it is called the sea, it is actually a lake. It is said that because the Bai people have never seen the sea, it is called Erhai to express their longing for the sea. Erhai Lake is shaped like a human ear. When the wind is calm, it looks like a dark green gemstone inlaid on the land of Yunnan.
