He was apparently trained by his father, Hans, a painter, and from 1495 to 1498 undertook work at Kronach for Coburg and Gotha. There is evidence that Cranach resided in Vienna between about 1500 and 1504. In 1504 he married Barbara Brengbier of Gotha; they had three daughters and two sons, Hans (died 1537) and Lucas the Younger (1515-1586), both of whom were painters. In 1505 Cranach established residence at Wittenberg, where he was court painter to three successive electors: Frederick the Wise, John the Constant, and John Frederick the Magnanimous. Cranach was a prosperous and respected citizen. He owned several houses and land, held the office of councilor, and was a burgomaster. He also worked for other princely patrons and was a follower and lifelong friend of Martin Luther. In 1550 Cranach followed John Frederick the Magnanimous to Augsburg, where the elector was in exile, and in 1552 accompanied him to Weimar. Ami de Luther, il accueille les idées nouvelles de la Réforme. S'il contribue à l'élaboration d'une iconographie protestante, il n'hésite pas, en peintre humaniste au talent éclectique, à aborder les sujets profanes et mythologiques. Né à Kronach, en Franconie, dont il adopte le nom comme patronyme, Lucas Cranach se forme dans l'atelier de son père qu'il quitte en 1498 pour voyager en Bavière et aller à Vienne où il signe ses premières œuvres. En 1505, il est appelé par le prince électeur de Saxe, Frédéric le Sage pour devenir le « peintre officiel » de la Cour, à Wittenberg. C'est là qu'il rencontre Martin Luther et les réformateurs dont il fait de nombreux portraits. Acquis aux idées de la Réforme, Cranach introduit dans ses tableaux d'inspiration religieuse les thèmes protestants. Mais la Cour de Saxe accueille aussi la Renaissance qui célèbre une peinture humaniste, érudite et précieuse. Cranach adopte pour ses nus un style gracieux et délicat à l'érotisme allusif. Avec ses deux fils, Hans et Lucas dit le Jeune, Cranach dirige un atelier important afin de satisfaire ses multiples commanditaires. Pendant cinquante ans, il occupe charges et honneurs à Wittenberg où il est élu trois fois bourgmestre. Cranach meurt en 1553, laissant une œuvre considérable. « L'art de Cranach est resté populaire à travers les siècles, il a même atteint un nouveau sommet de nos jours, il suffit de penser à la fascination qu'il a exercée sur Picasso. In this video we discuss who they were and how their art changed during the Reformation. We also talk about the importance of the visual arts more generally for Christians as a vehicle for the Gospel.

Kolejność została ułożona chronologicznie według daty urodzenia malarza. Swoją opowieść zaczynam od Giotta di Bondone, urodzonego w 1226 roku, i jego obrazem uważanym za pierwszy obraz renesansu – Pocałunkiem Judasza z 1305 roku. Lucas Cranach cel Bătrân s-a născut în anul 1472 la Kronach, localitate din Franconia Superioară. Este unul dintre cei mai renumiţi pictori germani ai Renaşterii. Biografie şi carieră : Numele adevărat al pictorului nu se cunoaşte, pseudonimul său adoptându-l după denumirea localităţii sale natale. Născându-se într-o familie de artişti, acesta nu avea cum să nu moştenească talentul şi pasiunea pentru pictură, cu atât mai mult cu cât tatăl său era pictor. Se cunosc foarte puţine informaţii despre copilăria şi prima perioadă a tinereţii pictorului, presupunându-se că iniţierea în pictură avusese loc chiar în atelierul de pictură al tatălui său. n 1505, Cranach primeşte o invitaţie din partea prinţului-elector Frederic al III-lea cel Înţelept, invitaţie care consta în numirea sa ca pictor oficial al curţii. Cranach acceptă invitaţia prinţului care era considerat un adevărat mecena al artelor. Drept urmare, Cranach pleacă principala reşedinţă a saxonilor Wittenberg. Păstrează această funcţie până la sfârşitul vieţii sale, pictând pentru trei generaţii de suverani. Din acel moment, Cranach are chiar şi un blazon reprezentat printr-un şarpe înaripat şi încoronat care semăna cu un liliac şi care ţine în bot un rubin montat într-un inel de aur.Călătoreşte în 1508 în Olanda în misiune diplomatică. Aici pictează portretele multor nobil şi chiar suverani. În acea perioadă, pictorul se afla în apogeul carierei sale artistice, renumele său fiind răsunător. Comenzile pe care le primea erau atât de numeroase încât Cranach îşi deschide propriul atelier. Pictorul se căsătoreşte cu Barbara Brengbier, fiica primarului din Gotha, în anul 1512. cei doi au împreuna doi fii care vor deveni pictori. Îşi deschide multe afaceri şi devine chiar primarul oraşului, iar în 1528 este cel mai înstărit locuitor din Wittenberg, mai ales datorită atelierului său de pictură deosebit de profitabil. Când principele său este capturat, Cranach îi salvează chiar viaţa prin intervenţia sa pe lângă Ioan Frederic, pentru care acesta pictase portretul.ucas Cranach cel Bătrân moare la data de 16 octombrie 1553 la Weimar. Citate : - "Marea prietenie care-l lega de Luther şi sentimentele alese pe care i le nutreau nobilii săi clienţi sunt o dovadă incontestabilă a caracterului desăvârşit al lui Cranach şi a spiritului său deschis."
