In 1997, Sian Welch, now 50, crawled across the finish line of the Ironman World Championship on Kona, Hawaii. In third place very late in the long race, Welch faded dramatically and suddenly found herself crawling for fourth against another failing athlete, Wendy Ingraham. The footage of the indomitable pair’s struggle to the finish line has simply become known as “The Crawl.” Welch says her life at the time was focused on winning the competition that consists of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile footrace. But when Welch’s husband and training partner was diagnosed with a heart condition, Sian's training came to a halt. Greg Welch was a world-renowned triathlete who won the ITU Triathlon World Championships in 1990 and the Ironman World Championship in 1994. In 1999, he was told he would never race again, and he had nine subsequent open-heart surgeries to treat ventricular tachycardia. “I hardly trained,” Sian says. “I couldn’t even get on my bike because (Greg) wasn’t with me.” When Sian found CrossFit in 2015, her competitive spark returned. Along with it came a desire to go back to Kona and compete in the Ironman. Her training with CrossFit 760 has helped her feel stronger and better than ever, she said—strong enough to take on the 140.6-mile journey again. “Ironman is about strength; it’s not about speed,” she says. “CrossFit is the key component.” This time, Sian isn’t focused on winning. Instead, she hopes to raise US$1 million for the Freedom to Live Foundation, which helps people with catastrophic injuries carry on normal lives. In October 1997, she and her compatriot Wendy Ingraham delivered a thrilling duel for fourth place on the final stretch of the Ironman Hawaii , as the two were dehydrated and exhausted overturned and could only crawl to the finish on all fours.[3][4] Sian Welch finished fifth in this competition
Wendy Ingraham and Sian Welch gave the 1997 Ironman World Championships the kind of drama no triathlon could buy. Within 50 yards of the finish line in Kailua-Kona, the two women simultaneously suffered severe cramps and wound up racing each other to the finish on their hands and knees before a worldwide TV audience. "It was like someone took a baseball bat and whacked my legs," said 34-year-old Wendy Ingraham of Walnut Creek, Calif., who finished fourth among the women. "It was an experience that made me better," said Welch, "but I put it out of my mind a long time ago." Both women are back on the Big Island for tomorrow's Ironman, and neither wants a repeat of the bizarre incident dubbed, "The Diaper Dash." "I plan to use a little more nutrition this year," said Welch, who was fifth. The 31-year-old San Diego resident found herself vomiting during the 112-mile bike ride. "I had no electrolytes and was only drinking Coke and water." Ingraham said her salt tablets fell out of her wrist band on the run, and that created problems for her last year. "I need a lot of sodium in my body," she said. To make sure she doesn't lose all of her tablets, she said she will tuck them various pieces of clothing on her person. Ingraham was leading the women's race until the 15th mile when the loss of her sodium tablets caused the cramps to begin. Welch arrived in the finish area in third place but wound up fifth after struggling to the finish on the strength of spectator chants of "Crawl! Crawl!" Her husband, Greg Welch, dragged her off the course after she got across the line. "Mentally, it made me stronger and now I can probably get through anything," said Ingraham who was picked up by her boyfriend and carried away.
Benton gets around doesn't he? And here he his causing a nuisance in a major athletic event.
After swimming 2.5 miles, cycling 112 miles and running 25 miles Sian Welch and Wendy Ingraham are trying to make it towards the finishline. But both their bodies have become to weak to make it. Whatch what happens! 🤍

FTL provides a “campus living” Independence Training Program for SCI (spinal cord injury) individuals who desire to achieve independence and a better quality of life. Recipients achieve this for themselves by being provided the time, support and collegial-like living environment to learn and practice the life-long, necessary skills that will enable them to manage, direct and take back control of every aspect of their life after leaving rehab, moving home or transferring from a long-term nursing facility. FTL applies all of its energy and effort into finding “what can be” for our recipients rather than merely settle for “what is.”

Determination and focus is key in every sport. Sian Welch’s epic crawl to the IRONMAN World Championship finish line in 1997 is a textbook example of this!
This is from around September 1989. Tony Unicomb and Greg Welch were interviewed by Andy Pascalidis before going to the Hawaii Ironman. Greg Welch finished 3rd as an age grouper behind Mark Allen and Dave Scott in Ironwar.

It combined three elements together (Swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, & run 26.2 miles) into one. Ofcourse the sport started with only a few competitors but has now grown into a worldwide phenomenon. The 15 participants have now become thousands of triathletes who have had to qualify to take part of the in Kailua-Kona Race every October. Like every sport, triathlon evolved with the time, improvements in gear and nutrition have ultimately resulted in a drastic decline in finishing times. The Kona race every October is the main event of the year for thriathletes, its where we get to know who the best of the best is and has made some of the most memorable moments in #history . For our first historic moment we must take a trip down memory lane to 1989, where the thwo strongest athletes all year were DAve Scott and Mark Allen, the two had a fierce rivalry and both shattered the World record at the time with 20 minutes. However after their fierce battle only 58 seconds would seperate Allen from Scott and he ultimately won the race. This recordbreaking moment will absolutely go down in history as these 2 men proved that not only you had to be physically strong to complete the course, this race also proved that the mental aspect of running a triathlon was detremental to winning an Ironman World Champioship. Our second moment is often referred to as "The crawl Race", which has become one of the most iconic scenes in the IRONMAN World Champioship history. Julie Moss had an eight minute lead over second place Kathleen McCartney, however she had pushed herself to her absolute limit and collapsed several times, she had to take a 3 minute break to get herself back together and looked to win the race with only half a mile to go, she gave it her all and crawled to the finish line as her legs simply gave up on her. McCartney had been chasing Moss and started gaining on her while she was struggling. Ultimately McCartney wo n the #IRONMANWorldChampionship 1982 with Julie Moss finishing 29 heartbreaking seconds later. 🎬Watch the entire video for more information! _ About TRIATHLON GLOBAL INSIGHTS 🌏 🎥 Videos about TRIATHLON, PRO TRIATHLETES, MOTIVATION, TRAINING, IRONMAN, RUNNING, SWIMMING AND BIKE RACES 🎨 Written, voiced and produced by TRIATHLON GLOBAL INSIGHTS 🚨 Subscribe now for more TRIATHLON, PRO TRIATHLETES, MOTIVATION, TRAINING, IRONMAN, RUNNING, SWIMMING AND BIKE RACES videos Watch More from TRIATHLON GLOBAL INSIGHTS: 🟢 Triathlon News: 🤍 🟡 Triathlon Races: 🤍 🟠 Triathlon Motivation: 🤍 _ 💻 Business Inquiries and Contact • For business inquiries, copyright matters or other inquiries please contact us at: triathlonglobalinsights🤍gmail.com ❓ Copyright Questions • If you have any copyright questions or issues you can contact us at triathlonglobalinsights🤍gmail.com ⚠️ Copyright Disclaimers • We use images and content in accordance with the YouTube Fair Use copyright guidelines • Section 107 of the U.S. Copyright Act states: “Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.” • This video could contain certain copyrighted video clips, pictures, or photographs that were not specifically authorized to be used by the copyright holder(s), but which we believe in good faith are protected by federal law and the fair use doctrine for one or more of the reasons noted above.
