The involvement of Africans in various Wikimedia Movement initiatives and affiliates has grown exponentially during the pandemic. But with reduced opportunities to meet in-person, many Wikimedians are not aware of the state of the general community but also what initiatives have been undertaken to enhance the opportunities available. During this session, we plan to provide an insight on the state of Wikimedia in Africa (community numbers & data, affiliates data, possible reasons as to why the situation is the way it is, which projects are leading etc); recent technological developments in the Wikimedia Movement and the effect they may have on African participation now and in the future. This will be in addition to addressing the developments around plans of select departments of the Wikimedia Foundation to understand what are the ideas for Africa in the next year.

NIGERIA | Why Was Biafra So Important?

12.03.2021

The Biafran War in Nigeria - also known as the Nigerian Civil War or the Nigeria-Biafra War - was one of the most bitter and bloody conflicts of the modern era. Over the course of three and a half years, it left well over a million people dead and millions more displaced. But it was also incredibly important in terms of shaping current international attitudes towards unilateral secession. And yet, surprisingly, the Biafran War is now largely forgotten internationally? So what was the conflict all about? Hello and welcome! My name is James Ker-Lindsay. Here I take an informed look at International Relations with a focus on territorial conflicts, secession, independence movements and new countries. If you like what you see, please do subscribe. If you want more, including exclusive content and benefits, consider becoming a channel member. Many thanks! SUBSCRIBE FOR FREE 🤍 JOIN THE CHANNEL 🤍 When Nigeria became independent in 1960 it did so as a country with deep ethnographic-linguistic and religious divisions. Within just a few years this came to the fore following widely disputed elections in 1964. This led to two coups in 1966, the first led by southern military officers, the second by officers from the north. This sparked vicious conflict between the Hausa-Fulani majority in the north and the Igbo in the South. This came to a head in May 1967, when the Igbo-dominated Eastern Region unilaterally declared independence as the Republic of Biafra. Just six weeks later, the Nigerian Government declared war on the breakaway province. While it never seemed in doubt that Nigeria would win, Biafra nevertheless enjoyed a degree of international support, especially at a public level. However, the vast majority of the international community stood against its secession. In this sense, the Biafran War - Nigeria's civil war - played a huge role in shaping modern attitudes to independence and secession. This information is stored in new types of entities, called Lexemes (L), Forms (F) and Senses (S). Lexicographical data will serve as the basis for Abstract Wikipedia's natural language generation capabilities. A few languages including Dagbani, Hausa and Igbo were selected to become focus languages for the development of this new project. This workshop session will walk participants through editing the Lexicographical data namespace in Dagbani, Hausa and Igbo languages. Also, participants will learn how to use the Spell4Wiki app to produce audio recordings of words in their language. We will walk them through the installation of the app, and how they can add their language, record audio files for Wiktionary and Wikimedia Commons. Towards the end, we will go into how these lexemes can be prepared for making text generation for the Abstract Wikipedia easier.

In 2016, we began a discussion around what Wikimedia will look like in 2030. The aim was to identify a common, strategic direction that would unite and inspire people across our movement. Our shared vision is of “a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.” To read the draft direction (first published August 2017) and join the discussion about the future of our movement, visit: 🤍 Also view on Wikimedia Commons: 🤍 and Vimeo: 🤍
