This week, we’re diving into the subject of Zionism and looking at where the idea of Jewish return to the Land of Israel came from. But what does this return look like? How has it changed through the centuries and what do we mean by Zionism anyway? Many people believe that “Zionism” originated with Theodore Herzl. That’s certainly an important piece of the puzzle. However, the connection of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel has been an integral part of the Jewish story for at least 3,000 years. Even when the Jews were no longer in the Land of Israel, they’ve had a longing to return. Join us as we outline the history of Zionism - from the bible onwards - and explain how this millenia-old yearning ultimately culminated in the establishment of the modern State of Israel. We’re unpacking the journey of the Zionist — from the beginning of the Roman exile in 70 CE to the present — its relationship with the Arabs in Mandatory Palestine, and its equation to colonialists today. Rooted in the word for the Land of Israel, Zion, the word Zionist may not actually be as “modern” as you thought! In fact, Zionists have been around for thousands of years. What is Zionism, and why is it so controversial? And how (and why) did Theodor Herzl, a secular writer, who didn’t know anything about Judaism, transform an ancient longing into a modern political movement that resulted in the establishment of the State of Israel? Short answer - antisemitism. Herzl was present at one of the most explosive trials of the day, which came to be known as the Dreyfus Affair. In the case, Alfred Dreyfus, a high ranking Jewish officer in the French army, was falsely accused of espionage and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil’s Island (he was later exonerated). It wasn’t just the trial that got Herzl started on his journey towards Zionism. The cries of “Death for the Jew” that were casually hurled around on the streets of Paris made him understand that a Jewish state was necessary to remove the problem of anti-semitism entirely. Herzl was seen as a crazy man in his time, and he certainly had some offbeat ideas, such as the idea for a mass conversion to Christianity (which was swiftly despatched), but his vision for a Jewish state became reality. A modern day Moses, Herzl never saw the country he envisaged, but due to his actions, and the actions of the Zionist leaders that followed, in 1948 the State of Israel came into being. Leading Israeli settler explains the language of Zionism as “building new settlements” which is more threatening than “fire and planes”. Daniela Weiss, in an interview with i24News from an illegal settlement refused to condemn the attacks on the Palestinian village of Huwwara this week and threatened if the Israeli government doesn’t “want to see acts like what happened in Huwwara, let us build more settlements” She called to pressure the Israeli government for the construction of more colonial settlements in the occupied West Bank. ‘Judaism does not and cannot accept Zionism,’ said spokesman of the Neturei Karta USA, Rabbi Yisroel Dovid Weiss, during the London leg of a UK tour. On a tour titled the ‘Muslim and Jew Tour: Beyond Israel’ with Dr Azzam Tamimi, a Palestinian author and broadcaster, Rabbi Weiss spoke on behalf of religious Neturei Karta Jews who oppose the state of Israel and actively campaign that ‘truly religious Jews reject Israel’. He also highlighted that they support the rights of Palestinians against the illegal occupation of their land. Rabbi Weiss added that Zionism is based on blasphemy and, in its essence, [Judaism] cannot have a state. He also mentioned how Rabbis cringed when they spoke about the Deir Yassin massacre of 1948, in which Irgun and Stern Gang Zionist militias attacked the village of Deir Yassin, killing at least 107 Palestinians. Rabbi Weiss spoke in front of banners that read “Authentic Rabbis always opposed Zionism and the state of Israel” and “Judaism demands a Free Jerusalem and all Palestine and forbids any Jewish State”. The tour presented by ‘One Democratic Palestine’ has visited many cities across the UK including London, Leicester and Coventry. #Judaism #Jew Subscribe to our channel: 🤍 Middle East Eye Website: 🤍 Follow us on TikTok: 🤍 Follow us on Instagram: 🤍 Like us on Facebook: 🤍 Follow us on Twitter: 🤍
While the State of Israel is barely 75 years old, the origins of Zionism actually go back a lot further than one might think. In fact, Zionism was born at three distinct moments in history that all contributed to Zionism as the world knows it today. The first story of Zionism dates back thousands of years ago starting with Abraham in biblical times. This paved the way for the modern movements of 200 years ago during the Enlightenment and 125 years ago when the first political Zionist movement was created. Each of these occurrences shared the same dream for the Jewish people to be recognized as a sovereign nation in their homeland, Israel. Whereas Judaism is an ancient monotheistic religion, Zionism is a newer political phenomenon, inspired by the European national liberation movements of the nineteenth century. This video briefly explains the diversity of Zionist perceptions.
The Neturei Karta, a small and highly controversial sect of religious Jews, have gained an outsized reputation due to their extremist beliefs and actions against the State of Israel. Despite their limited numbers, they've managed to make headlines by associating with groups that hate Israel and call for its destruction, like Hamas, Hezbollah, and even figures like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Yasser Arafat. Their staunch opposition to Zionism and advocacy for the dismantling of the world's only Jewish state has left many in the Jewish community and beyond outraged and perplexed. What could possibly drive a Jewish group like the Neturei Karta to take such an extreme stance against their own self-determination, going as far as to endorse antisemitic groups and undermine the safety and security of the Jewish community? And in light of the dangers posed by the Neturei Karta, how should the wider Jewish community confront and counteract the influence of this fringe group to protect the unity and well-being of the community as a whole? Unraveling the ideology of the Neturei Karta and revealing their origins, beliefs, and motivations sheds light on how this fringe group has managed to capture the attention of the global community and why their message is so dangerous and divisive. The Jewish community and others need to understand that the Neturei Karta are regarded by even the most extremist Jews who still remain within the range of accepted Jewish theology as belonging outside the broader Jewish community. This is because all Jews agree that selling out their fellow Jews, in the context of both the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as well as the harm they cause by giving credibility to antisemites worldwide, is never an acceptable Jewish ideological position. Zionism, the movement for the establishment of a Jewish homeland, got new momentum during World War 1. Zionists, like Chaim Weizmann rallied for support in their respective home countries, others wanted to actively advance the zionist idea by taking part in the war and fought with the Jewish Legions. The Balfour Declaration of 1917 was another step towards fulfilling the idea of a home for the Jewish people. » HOW CAN I SUPPORT YOUR CHANNEL? An argument ignited in Bahrain’s parliament after MP Mamdouh Abbas al-Saleh referred to Israel as an “usurping, criminal, Zionist entity”. Upon request by a foreign advisor who was present at the session, the statement received an objection and was asked to be removed from the session’s report by the parliament speaker. The objection angered other MPs, including Zeinab Abdel Amir, who said the description should remain in the session’s report. “It is unacceptable for a foreign, Arab consultant… to ask to remove the phrase from the session’s report.” MP Abbas was criticising a Bahraini airline for providing discounted flights to Israel. Bahrain is amongst the Gulf states that normalised its relations with Israel in the Abraham Accords mediated by the US in September 2020. However, analysts say that the majority of Bahraini people do not support the normalisation with Israel, and Bahrainis have repeatedly shown opposition to the normalisation through rallies in solidarity with the Palestinians. The conflict is really only 100 years old. Subscribe to our channel! 🤍 One of the biggest myths about the Israel-Palestine conflict is that it's been going on for centuries, that this is all about ancient religious hatreds. In fact, while religion is involved, the conflict is mostly about two groups of people who claim the same land. And it really only goes back about a century, to the early 1900s. At its heart, it is a conflict between two self-determination movements — the Jewish Zionist project and the Palestinian nationalist project — that lay claim to the same territory.
