Sign up for MORE awesome content at 🤍 Chords are built from scales. A triad is the most simple type of chord, it consists of 3 notes. To construct a triad you must take the 1st, 3rd and 5th. You could think of it as playing the root note, skipping the next note of the scale and playing the next one. Again, skip the following note and play the next one. These three notes create a triad. You can get major triads as well as minor triads (and more!). You can also play these chords in different inversions. To do this, move whichever note is on the bottom of the chord to the top. There's more on chords in my book: 🤍 Learning piano chords and chord progressions can seem pretty daunting, but you can get a long way on the instrument by knowing just a few. In fact, you can play hundreds of songs if you learn just four easy piano chords. In this tutorial I'm going to assume you're a beginner and that, while you know the basic notes on the piano keyboard, you know little or nothing about chords, harmony and improvisation. I'll teach you four chords and a simple progression in the key of C that you can adapt to help you play very many different songs. You can also use this easy tutorial to start learning some bits and pieces of piano improvisation, and as an intro to some of the other piano tutorials on my channel. The chords I look at are C, F, G and A minor. The first thing I explain is the importance of being able to play these chords in many different voicings and inversions - the piano offers hundreds of different ways of playing simple chords, and it's important that you really get comfortable with find chord shapes quickly on the keyboard. From there we take a simple chord progression and begin to play it to time, starting with just single chords and moving on to slightly more complex, but easy piano comps. We also look at ways that you can start improvising on the chords to create more interesting effects, and also mention playing in different keys and learning how to pick out melody at the keyboard. A really important point that I make several times is that you have to practise this pretty hard - learning piano isn't easy, and it's really crucial that you give your brain time to adjust to the complex stuff you're asking it to do. However, with a few hours or days of practice it shouldn't take long for you to get pretty reasonable at playing chords on the piano. It's all about determination and sticking to it! If you've enjoyed this tutorial you might also like my book, How To Really Play The Piano - there's a link at the top of this description.
► Download the workbook: 🤍 In this lesson we explore the beautiful 1436251 Progression in the key of Eb Major. If you are looking for a nice chord progression to introduce your jazz standards, this is the progression you have been waiting for. We start by building the diatonic 7th chords in the key of Eb to understand the base chords that we are working with. We then start to change the chord qualities to dominant 7 which allows us to access more interesting colours and textures. This progression is the perfect introduction for any tune that starts on the Imaj7 chord. A nice touch is to run up the upper structure triad on the final V7 chord which then leads smoothly and convincingly into the start of the tune. We demonstrate using this intro for the tunes "Misty" and "Over The Rainbow". #JazzPianoChords #JazzChordProgressions
Several people have asked me to make a tutorial revisiting all the basic piano chords - so here it is! There's a little bit of theory, covering how piano chords are constructed, and how you can voice and invert them on the keyboard. Most chords are built of thirds, and once you've figured out how to make major and minor thirds, and understood a couple of other basic intervals, it's pretty easy to work out all the chords you need, even if you're a relative beginner on the instrument. As always, the secret to really mastering this stuff is to spend time sitting at the piano practising the techniques I talk about. One thing you could do is dig out a song book that has a vocal line with the chords written in. Practise reading the chords, and soon you won't need the written piano part :) MY NEW BOOK, HOW TO BE A BETTER MUSICIAN: 🤍 BUY BILL’S THREE EBOOKS AS A BUNDLE FOR JUST £18.95 (30 PERCENT SAVING!): 🤍 BILL’S PIANO PACKS 🤍 EDIT: one chord I missed out was the minor ninth (-m9). After watching the tutorial you can probably work it out pretty easily: it's the -m7 with an added major third. 00:00 Introduction 06:00 Basic major and minor 07:30 Dominant seventh (chords ending -7, e.g. G7, Eb7) 08:30 Minor seventh (chords ending -m7) 09:05 Major seventh (-maj7) 09:45 Sixth (-6 or -m6) 11:50 Ninth (-9) 12:29 Major ninth (-maj9) 13:16 Added ninth (-add9) 14:25 Suspended fourth (-sus or -sus4) 15:48 Diminished and diminished seventh (-dim or -°; -dim7 or -°7) 17:43 Augmented (-aug or -+) NB, I don't mention this in the tutorial but the minor ninth (-m9) is the -m7 with an added major third.

A simple and efficient method to construct ANY major & minor chord on the piano. Sign up for MORE awesome content at 🤍 In this piano tutorial, we look at an easy method to build major and minor chords. The idea is to count the notes in half-steps. Doing this allows us to count the notes between each note. For example, a major chord plays the root note, skips 3 notes, plays the next note, skips 2 notes and plays the next note. So the first skip is 3 and the second skip is 2. Therefore we can call major chords "3-2" chords. This applies to ALL major chords. To construct a minor chord we need to reverse this, so we need to play a "2-3" chord. An easy way to remember this is because the first skip of the minor chord is small, and minor & small can mean a similar thing. If you have any questions just leave a comment below. One of the questions I get asked a lot is how to play complex chords in a way that is easy, intuitive and immediate. I totally understand why people ask this question because I still remember the days when I’d look at complex chord shapes and be totally mystified at what was going on! The good news is if you’ve spent time practicing your triads and basic major and minor chords, you have a really solid foundation that you need to jump into the next step: building major and minor 7th chords. The best way to do this is by building on a little something I like to call ‘Focus Independence.’ See our piano lessons: ►🤍

In this piano tutorial, let's talk about SLASH CHORDS! These are such an awesome way to write chords... Sign up for MORE awesome content at 🤍 Every slash chord contains two bits of information. The letter on the left side of the slash tells us what chord to play in our right hand. The 2nd letter, on the right-hand side, tells us what the bass note is, or what note we should play with our left hand. For example, A/C# simply means, play an A major chord in your right hand along with the note C# in your left. Slash chords such as Amaj7 / B are a simple way to write complex chords. Technically, this chord would be a Bsus13, but seeing a slash chord makes it much easier for us to know what we should be playing. Don't worry about the technical names when starting out, just practice playing the chord over the given bass note and you're all good to go! Any questions, just leave a comment below. * PianoPig is an online platform for piano lessons in HD, covering scales, chords, soloing and more. For beginner, intermediate and advanced players.
