NAS Brands in 2021 – Which One Should You Choose? 🤍 Buying your first Network Attached Storage (NAS) device can be a remarkably daunting task! Even for the most technologically knowledgable, a NAS is a very different kind of device than most of the hardware in your environment. At its heart, it is just a computer (like most things are when you break them down to the basics) that is built for a specific task. However, there are numerous elements of a NAS (such as it always being ON, the constant remote accessibility and focus on storage primarily) that set it apart from most other devices, and this si where a lot of people get a bit intimidated by it. There is always the option of using cloud services, such as DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive and more, but these are often paid monthly subscription services, involve your data being shared across other services and (most worrying of all) leaves your precious data in a position to be used for analytics without your knowledge OR open to hacking because of the sheer size of the target. Add to this the fact that in most cases, a severed connection to the internet means a severed connection to your data, and the appeal of moving away from 3rd party cloud and on to a NAS is pretty clear. The industry of NAS has been in constant growth for over 30 years, with big players like HP, Dell and IBM steadily losing the home and SMB market to the likes of Synology, QNAP and more. The brand diversity in the field of NAS servers has continued to grow right up until 2021, with the benefit that the way you can interact with your data, what NAS devices can do and the price point of this technology being exceedingly affordable (with fully featured solutions WITH storage media arriving as low as £200). So, today I want to talk about what NAS is, what a NAS can do, and which NAS Brand you should consider buying in 2021. This description contains links to and Amazon. These links will take you to some of the products mentioned in today's video. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. Why would you consider the QNAP TS-453E? Arriving in an oddly efficient and affordable, yet very capable form with its Intel Quad Core, 2.5GbE and 8GB memory architecture – this device stands out from the rest of the band’s value tier. For most users looking at buying their first Network Attached Storage (NAS) device, a 4-Bay system is the perfect blend of storage, ability and value. A four-drive (HDD or SSD) system opens the door to RAID 5 configurations, throughput of 500-600MB/s and it is also where brands tend to begin stretching their wings in terms of the hardware they choose to include in their systems. Now, the QNAP TS-X53 series of devices (previously in X53 Pro, X53A, X53B and X53D) was always considered the Prosumer/SMB tier of their portfolio. However, that convention changed with the release of the TS-x64 series, with the TS-464 4-bay arriving as the best example of the brand’s prosumer tier NAS to date. So, when the TS-453E arrived, it was really surprising that QNAP was planning to continue this product family. It was also very, VERY surprising when you learned that this value-tier device (following in the architectural footsteps of the 2016 TS-451+) it has a number of hardware choices that might actually result in it challenging the TS-464 higher tier by quite a degree! In many ways, the TS-453E is a little too good to be true and certainly more than the dual-core and/or ARM-equipped systems one would have expected here. So, let’s review this new NAS, discuss what sets it apart from other prosumer/value NAS from the brand and ultimately decide if it deserves your data? However, it got complicated. We went from 3-5 media streaming services, to suddenly HUNDREDS, with Films/Boxsets appairing on exclusive platforms (in some cases actual tv seasons being divided across different services too). This also led to TV shows being available/featured on a streaming service considerably shorter, due to the show-owner realising that timed exclusivity and switching streamingly platforms is much more lucrative in the long run. So, the streaming services STOPPED being so convenient, stopped being such good value – with most households now having/needing 3-4 different subscription services (so, in most cases Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and the cable TV/Sky provider service) and spending $400-500 a year, and not owning a single piece of media or having control of when things are not available. Add to that the rather bias search abilities of these platforms pushing ‘suggested’ content and you cannot help but pine for those simple days of sitting on the sofa and watching that DVD. Enjoying your Plex Media Server over HDMI with QNAP NAS 🤍 Buying a NAS Drive for use as a Plex Media server is pretty common these days and something that alot of people have done in the past to huge success. With access to your own privately owned multimedia, the ability to share that media with friends and family, access Plex TV channels and enjoy all the metadata background images, reviews and information that are included to dress up your movies and boxsets beautifully – the appeal is pretty obvious. However many users also like the option to access their Plex Media Server locally over HDMI, i.e. connecting a TV to the HDMI port of their NAS and then accessing the Plex Media Server (with all it’s graphical flair and design) but with near-zero latency, which is hugely beneficial for MASSIVE 4K H.264 high bitrate media that is just so big to stream over the network, but HDMI can handle immediately. Till recently, the very best way of having HDMI access to your Plex Media Server was using the QNAP HD Station application and many of the QNAP HDMI enabled NAS. The QNAP TS-464 NAS Drive Review - 🤍 Full Details of the Plex Tests, with extra tests + more details on how Plex works on the QNAP TS-464 NAS on the blog - 🤍 For those looking at making the move away from cloud platforms and towards their own private server, the new QNAP TS-464 NAS ticks ALOT of boxes. Arriving as the latest release in their long. long-running flagship series of Prosumer/SMB hardware (following the TS-453D, TS-453B, TS-453A, etc) around every 2-2.5 years, this new system is easily the best iteration of this tier of their portfolio they have ever released. That shouldn’t be a surprise really, as the rest of the hardware industry improves in power, performance and efficiency, you would expect each release to be better than the last anyway. However, it is how the TS-464 has evolved from it’s predecessors and an arguably more mature stance on its hardware design compared with those before it from QNAP that make this an incredibly interesting NAS to review. I have long stated that when it comes to NAS hardware, QNAP still continues to be the innovators, providing the most cutting edge hardware vs value in the industry. What makes the TS-464 series stand out further though is the sheer scope of its hardware, providing some unparalleled levels of scalability in its architecture that are unmatched elsewhere. In software, despite the brand providing its complete OS level platform, services and applications in QTS, the brand has suffered something of a tumultuous 18+ months with a spate of ransomware attacks and vulnerabilities leading to confidence in the platform being shaken. Therefore QNAP hopes that with the release of their latest software revision QTS 5, their new hardware series in the TS-x64 onwards and they’re doubling down on security tools, defaults and a more lock-key approach to their platform internally, that they can move forward from these public misgivings. Whilst Synology have been shifting the home/business point of a number of their popular diskstation devices, QNAP has been doubling down on their hardware choices at that same tier and either upgrading what works or swapping out what doesn’t The QNAP TS-262 NAS is designed to be a more affordable Intel-powered alternative to the prosumer ad fully featured TS-264, that still keeps the elements of prosumer hardware that continue to draw the eye of PC-builders and more tech versed buyers, who nonetheless still find the appeal of a turnkey pre-built solution convenient. Arriving in a 2-Bay and 4-Bay version, the QNAP TS-x62 series hopes to be a more confident entry point for first-time NAS buyers and SMB’s looking to move away from 3rd party cloud, but is this a notable improvement over the now 3 years old TS-251D that it serves to replace? It’s price tag of $439 / £399 / €439 (tax and shipping where you are will likely reflect this price in your region) is possibly going to place it outside of the scope of Value/ARM NAS buyers, but here are the Highlights of the QNAP TS-262 NAS Looking for deals and offers on all things NAS, DAS, SSD, HDD and more? It’s not a big ask, is it! Do you remember when watching movies and boxsets from your sofa was easy? You owned a few hundred DVDs or Blurays, you popped in the disc for what you wanted to watch, then you watched it. It had a few extra steps that Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video and Disney+, BUT you owned what you watched and you were in control of what you wanted to see. The dominance of subscription streaming services was unquestionable and for a while, it genuinely felt like it was the best option for ease of access to a huge library of multimedia that you only really wanted to watch once or twice anyway – all for just $5-10 per service. It is for this reason that many have made the jump over to Plex Media Server. NASCompares Free Advice Area - 🤍 Buying a NAS for Plex Media Server – 8 Things People Get WRONG! 🤍 If you have decided to invest in a network-attached storage device to host your Plex media server, then congratulations, you are close to owning one of the easiest and most user-friendly multimedia home server options out there with a GUI and features that rival the likes of Netflix and more. Although paid subscription streaming services can be very attractive and affordable in the short-term, in the long-term you end up paying for content you don’t own, a limited choice of content that changes regularly and even end up having to watch the occasion advert – on a PAID platform?! Many of us own hundreds of boxsets and movies at home in digital form, or in disc form that is waiting to be switched to a more streamable form, that you can simply load onto a NAS and then enjoy the benefits of Plex with. However, although the price of a solid NAS has come down substantially and the ease of setup never being more simple, there are still many common mistakes that people make when buying a NAS for a Plex media server the first time. These errors end up ich either costing more money to resolve or have to be endured until the next upgrade. In order to help you choose the right NAS for plex correctly the first time, I have compiled a list of the most common mistakes that NAS buyers make when choosing a solution. Some are small and some are large, but all of them are easy things to miss as you narrow down the choices. So here are 8 common mistakes made by Plex users when choosing their first NAS. The QNAP TS-453D 4-Bay NAS Drive Hardware Review 🤍 If you have been in the market to buy a new server device for your home or small business, then chances are that you are already well aware that NAS has evolved (much like most other technology) into quite alot more than the simple 'hard drive I connect to over the internet' architecture it once was. The abilities to this kind of tech are pretty well-marketed these days (yes, but me too), especially when compared with 3rd party cloud services and file streaming subscriptions (such as Google Drive and Dropbox). This has become even more true now NAS providers are working with collaboration platforms in Office 365 and GSuite. Buying a NAS drive in 2020 has become more than just about saving money over the years and enjoying your media (dropping Netflix and subscription renting limitations) and has become it's own standalone operating system and complete data storage solution. Into this remarkably well-explored industry, we find the new QNAP TS-453D NAS, the latest addition to the almost decade-old X53 series and one that on paper has the potential to massively out-deliver every generation in this series thus far. With improvements on each hardware specification that counts to carry it forward for several years for future-proofing along with continued innovations in QTS - today we want to look at the brand new 4-Bay TS-453D NAS from QNAP and see if it deserves your data? Thanks QNAP NAS with Plex brings you the perfect multimedia experience. But when it comes to finding the right NAS, which of QNAP's variety of solutions is best for your needs? We help narrow it down to help you chose the ideal NAS to host your Plex Media Server. Setting up your Plex Media Server with a NAS should only take a few minutes. Plex lets you store all your media-including movies, TV shows, photos, and music on the NAS, and allowing you to enjoy them on all your devices including your smartphone, tablet, Smart TV, as well as via most media streaming devices (e.g. Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, Fire TV). A perfect media experience, whether it's watching a movie or video or streaming music, requires a stable environment that includes your Plex Media Server and your network. Since our NAS is designed to run 24/7 without having to power off every day like your PC, your multimedia files are available online all the time. The NAS acts as your private cloud which allows you to remotely access and enjoy your media anytime on any device. Transcoding is crucial when it comes to enjoying the smooth playback of your files without any interruptions. Original high definition content stored in formats such as .mkv, .mp4 and etc, often presents the challenge of file incompatibility with different streaming players. While on-the-go, bandwidth can lag while streaming high-def content stored from home, if it is not transcoding down to a suitable resolution would cause your bandwidth to lag. This is where Plex comes in-it transcodes media stored on your NAS and lets you play it on different media players and devices without stalling or hiccups. Because Plex uses only software transcoding, it relies mainly on the processor of the NAS to do hardware transcoding using the power of the NAS's CPU. Our suggestion: to guarantee a smooth video playback, choose the NAS model which has at least an Intel-based CPU for HD content transcoding, and Intel® Core™ i3 (or higher-end) for most scenarios, including extreme high bit-rate HD video content. It is recommended to check out the official NAS compatibility list by Plex. Taking into account your budget and transcoding needs, you can make an informed decision. If you've been paying pricey monthly fees for your TV cable boxes at home, then you may consider the all-new Plex DVR feature* that Plex has recently released to its Plex Pass users. The beautiful integration between DVR, Plex, and QNAP can drastically redefine your home TV lifestyle. Best Plex Media Server NAS to Buy in 2019 🤍 If you are looking to upgrade your multimedia setup in 2019, chances are that you have already heard of the great multimedia application, Plex Media Server (PMS), that allows you to access all your movies and boxsets anywhere in the world, on almost any device! Plex is supported by everything from Smart TVs and Consoles, through to iOS and Android Phones – this incredibly accessible and intuitive media application provides all your owned media to you, as well as dressing it with titles, descriptions, background studio information, cast lists and recommendations for other shows! Pick up your Perfect Synology Plex NAS here - 🤍 It is the perfect multimedia tool for those that want the colourful and information user interface similar to Netflix and Amazon Instant, but want to enjoy their own media, rather than stream/rent media from an online source! If you are looking to build your perfect Plex Media Server, it is highly recommended that you use a Network Attached Storage (NAS) drive. This affordable server solution for plex means you have a discreet solution that is easy to setup, easy to forget and will just run in the corner of a room/cupboard as your multimedia centre and let you access all your films, box sets and home movies ANYWHERE in the world. However, choosing the right NAS for a plex media server can be difficult. Big brands such as Synology, QNAP, Asustor, WD and Netgear all have a range of NAS drives available that all promise to support the Plex Media Server application (which is FREE), but each performs better or worse than another. So today, I want to discuss the Top Plex Media Server NAS from each brand, at £500, £1000 and £2000+. mportant Considerations When Using Plex Media Server on a NAS Although the Plex Media Server application is available for NAS drives, mobile phones, tablets, PCs, TVs, consoles and more, the way you plan on using it will certainly change the kind of NAS you will need for your perfect plex media server NAS. There are so, so many options that are open to you and though you can just select the default/base setup for ease, if you want a more tailored PLEX NAS, you will need to factor the following considerations before choosing the right NAS drive. 720p, 1080p and 4K on a Plex Media Server NAS The resolution and format of the media you want to watch should be taken into consideration. For a start, although a massive 4K version of Avengers will look spectacular on a modern Smart TV, it will be huge overkill in file size and resolution for a mobile phone and in most cases for smooth playback, low mobile data use and just ease of access, a NAS will resize/change the file to a format to a version that is better for the device you are watching on. If your video library contains a big mix of high-resolution media and/or you are going to be watching on a range of different devices, then you should spend a little more for a NAS with a much more capable CPU inside. Choosing Between the Synology DS920+ and QNAP TS-464 NAS is more than just about how you are spending your money at checkout! Making the move away from 3rd public cloud storage can be a big, BIG decision for some users. The ‘freemium’ and low cost monthly subscription to the likes of Google Drive and DropBox seems like a drop in the ocean, right up until you realise that over the years you have spent hundreds of pounds and you face the fact that you are going to need to consider moving that data onto something more long term and ‘in house’. For many users, this is their first encounter with two of the bigger brands in the world of NAS, Synology and QNAP and although at a glance they seem t provide the same kind of solution, even a brief second glance reveals that these two brands have very, very different ideas of where you should be spending your money. Synology is the sleek, apple-esc presented solution that promises a smooth and uncomplex experience, with an arguably more rigid and fixed architecture. Whereas QNAP is the more customizable and flexible in its hardware and software, but has a slightly higher learning curve and requires more time to configure perfectly. Both brands provide an excellent range of NAS solutions with each of the solutions in today’s comparison being quite similar in price, but what you are getting for your money, the range of software included, the scope of hardware that is available and how they translate to upgradable and scalability is incredibly different! So, today we are going to compare the Synology DS920+ NAS released in 2020 (but still a firm favourite now) against the newly released QNAP TS-464 NAS. Thanks for watching. Do you still need help? NASCompares Free Advice Area - 🤍 The QNAP TS-133 NAS Drive Review on NASCompares - 🤍 The QNAP TS-133 is a new NAS, sure, but there have been ALOT of these systems for a while now and why should you care about this one? It’s a valid question. Although network-attached storage (NAS) has been around for quite a number of years, the average buyer has diversified quite dramatically. NAS systems once started life as mini servers for professionals and small/medium business (SMB) users to allow them to have their very own alternative to smaller subscription business cloud systems. However, when NAS first started becoming more home-user-friendly, a huge range of solutions quickly developed that were tailored to different user requirements, budgets and scales. One area of NAS that still continues to have a moderate (if slightly entry-level) following is that of single bay (AKA 1-Bay) NAS drives that serve as the first step for many into owning their own private server. Arriving at a considerably more affordable price point than their larger, RAID enabled brothers and sisters, 1-Bay NAS drives such as the QNAP TS-133 provide a base level introduction to the software and services available in a NAS, whilst streamlining the hardware for efficiency. Many might argue that you can just buy a bigger and more powerful NAS, then just install a single HDD, but those users would be rather missing the point. Today I want to review the QNAP TS-133 NAS drive, Discuss design, hardware, what it can do and what it can’t do. Right now, at the start of 2022, the QNAP TS-133 is the most powerful 1-Bay NAS that you can buy commercially (again, in the context of 1 HDD NAS systems) but arrives a pinch more expensive than most. So, let’s review the TS-133 NAS and decide whether it deserves your data in 2022/2023 NASCompares Free Advice Area - 🤍 Vulnerabilities And Exploits On Synology & QNAP NAS – Stay Updated! - 🤍 This description contains links to Amazon. NASCompares Free Advice Area - 🤍 The QNAP TS-233 NAS Drive Written Review - 🤍 Full details of the Plex Media Server Tests of the QNAP TS-233 NAS, with more information on how these tests were conducted and explanations of the jargon, here on NASCompares blog - 🤍 Making the switch from the likes of Google Drive, DropBox and the rest can be rather intimidating. You have reached a point where you have used up the meagre amount of free space they offer you, looked at the monthly cost and thought "nah, I'll get my own". For the more budget-focused NAS buyer, the recently released TS-233 NAS from QNAP has quite a lot of appeal. Budget (AKA value, AKA cheap, AKA low priced) NAS drives have always held a very popular area of the home user private server market - arriving at a price point that is comparable to maybe 2-3 years of cloud storage subscription, but with the added benefit of you actually owning the storage space and not renting, these systems ate ones that supply a light introduction to private server ownership. Whether you are looking at just a simple backup and media streaming device, a NAS to add to your existing storage setup as a backup or 1-2 specific tools (AI photo powered storage/recognition, surveillance, plex, etc), more cost-effective solutions like these can be very appealing. However, all too often that low, low price tag (at least in comparison to more powerful prosumer/SMB devices) can indicate that the device is going to arrive with some fairly low-end hardware and what you save in £/$/€ , you lose in the time it takes to get things done. So, today I want to talk about QNAP's latest budget buyer offering, the TS-233 NAS, talk about the hardware, the software, what it can do, what it can't and ultimately whether it deserves your data? Review of the QNAP TS-873A Ryzen Desktop NAS Drive - Worth your Data? 🤍 If you are a fan of NAS storage or are in the market for a solid piece of desktop data storage hardware, then there is a good chance that you have been looking at 8-Bay solutions. Arguably, at this capacity of storage (both in network-accessible and/or direct accessible varieties) that things get series. Serious considerations for surveillance, virtualization, expandability and upgradability all become dealbreakers for buyers and although this is not the first 8 HDD system that QNAP has released, it has to be said that this is potentially one of the most mature releases I have seen from the brand in quite a few years. In the past we have typically found solutions that were incredibly powerful, hardware heavy but expensive or solutions that were affordable but underpowered, leading to early disappointment. The new TS-873A is very much a different beast, as it promises a much better middle ground than solutions that came before, as well as still managing to provide hardware options that are simply not available on rival solutions. So, is this new 8-Bay solution just another NAS system that gets lost in the noise, or is it something that genuinely breaks the mould? Perhaps somewhere in between? Where to Buy 🤍 🤍 QNAP NAS with Plex brings you the perfect multimedia experience. But when it comes to finding the right NAS, which of QNAP’s variety of solutions is best for your needs? We help narrow it down to help you chose the ideal NAS to host your Plex Media Server. Setting up your Plex Media Server with a NAS should only take a few minutes. Plex lets you store all your media-including movies, TV shows, photos, and music on the NAS, and allowing you to enjoy them on all your devices including your smartphone, tablet, Smart TV, as well as via most media streaming devices (e.g. Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, Fire TV). A perfect media experience, whether it’s watching a movie or video or streaming music, requires a stable environment that includes your Plex Media Server and your network. Because Plex uses only software transcoding, it relies mainly on the processor of the NAS to do hardware transcoding using the power of the NAS’s CPU. If you’ve been paying pricey monthly fees for your TV cable boxes at home, then you may consider the all-new Plex DVR feature* that Plex has recently released to its Plex Pass users. The beautiful integration between DVR, Plex, and QNAP can drastically redefine your home TV lifestyle. Easily record the show and coming back a few hours later to enjoy while skipping the commercials. And because QNAP is also connected to your home network, you can easily set up the QNAP as the ultimate source of storage for all of your recorded content. New 4-Bay NAS for a New Decade - Does the TS-451D2 Deserve Your Data? 🤍 Plex Performance Results for the QNAP TS=451D2 - 🤍 If you have found this NAS review, then chances are that you already know a little about the QNAP TS-451D2. In fact, I will go a little further. There is a good chance that you (yes, you reading this) are one of the people that were looking to buy a new NAS solution at the end of 2020 and found that...well... nothing was released. Yes, there was a tonne of high-end enterprise rackmounts, along with a bundle of new software improvements - but for the home or small business owner, the NAS scene was pretty quiet. There was plenty of reasons for this, ranging from a constantly evolving world economy, the hardware shortages, to changes in cloud trends and a little bit of uncertainty to boot. Whatever the reason, the usually busy September period of the year was oddly quiet. However, the more I hear, the more I am convinced that 2021 is looking ridiculously busy! The new TS-451D2 is a step into a new decade for QNAP NAS and with it, we see a much more mature, established and self-assured company than ever before. With a newer generation of pretty much, every hardware component in the TS-451D2 over its predecessor (the TS-251A and TS-451+ too), there is alot to love, but is this new QNAP NAS just a rehash of the old or are we looking at a 4-Bay that is exactly what we needed! QNAP TS-464 or the Synology DS920+ NAS Drive – Which Should You Buy? 🤍 Choosing Between the Synology DS920+ and QNAP TS-464 NAS is more than just about how you are spending your money at checkout!
